 Welcome
& Bienvenidos

Welcome to the AFSCME Local 1072 web page!
It's good to have you here. This web page will help you reach us and get information on the latest developments in the workplace.

I don't need to tell you that we are living through difficult times. Most of the gains enjoyed by university staff are eroding beneath our feet. The university's financial priorities clearly demonstrate that we are not respected for the work we do. Sometimes it seems that the administrators operate under the delusion that the university can run itself.

Only by organizing can we make our voices heard. Our union is the best tool we have to move our cause forward.

If you are satisfied with the way things are -- stay home and watch TV. If you think things should be better not only for yourself but for all who work in higher education,
I invite you to join with us in AFSCME Local 1072. There is a better way.

Greg Johnson
President, AFSCME Local 1072

Greg Johnson
Presidente de AFSCME local 1072

Furloughs AND Pay Increases?

$16 MILLION IN PAY INCREASES FOR THE $100K-PLUS CROWD AT UMCP

FURLOUGHS AND TUITION INCREASES

FOR EVERYONE ELSE

 DO YOU REMEMBER THIS EMAIL?

From: President C.D. Mote, Jr.                             Sent: August 29, 2009

Subject: Update on the budget

Dear University of Maryland Family:

. . .

The two budget cuts of July 22 and August 26, taken together, reduce our base, ongoing budget by $11.2 million and take away $16.4 million in reserves or "fund balance" funds. . . . The grand total of base budget and reserve reductions during this recessionary period is approximately $86.2 million.

We are again faced with the unfortunate reality of furloughs. . . .

Given that we have no alternative, we will adjust and we will continue to drive forward to build a great university to the best of our ability.  Your suggestions, ideas and perspectives are of great value to me and to all of us throughout the campus administration as we work to craft a thoughtful, effective and compassionate approach to these challenges.  I have the deepest respect for your faith and patience, and for your understanding of the actions we must take to find the pathway forward.

. . .

Yours sincerely,

C. D. Mote, Jr., President

WELL, SO DO WE! AND WE DON'T WANT IT TO HAPPEN AGAIN

Thanks to the Diamondback Salary Guide, we can evaluate for ourselves the impact of our university’s “thoughtful, effective and compassionate approach” to the budget crisis—

The 1142 members of  the 2009-2010 “CENTURY CLUB” (UMCP employees paid more than $100K per year) seem to have enjoyed significantly more “compassion” than the rest of us:

·       Membership: 312 Staff and 830 Faculty

·       Average staff pay increase: $9,947

·       Average faculty pay increase: $15,953

·       The top 23 staff and top 134 faculty received pay increases of more than 20 percent
