When : Tuesday, June 5th between 7am - 4:30pm

Picture
After almost a year of negotiations, the bargaining team of the UMD local union reached an agreement with University of Maryland College Park on  a new union contract. For this new contract to go into effect, we must vote to ratify it. It is important that we send a clear message of unity with a strong ratification vote to accept the agreement.
The University came into negotiations expecting and demanding a lot of sacrifices on the part of your union. The University's initial demands demonstrated their lack of respect for the people that make the University function as well as it does. But AFSCME members fought back, won important victories for University employees, and beat back ALL the University's demands.

WE WON

  • An agreement to negotiate with Administration about how raises are given, and the right to work out a fair system and push for more money
  • A 2% raise that everyone will recieve January 2019
  • An additional half day of Professional Development time
  • A cap on parking fee increases. The increase will be 1% above the current 7%
  • Safe and convenient parking for early morning shifts
  • An agreement to protect Temporary Protected Status employees' benefits and employment

WE STOPPED

  • Unlimited parking fee increases
  • The right to fire exempt employees for any reason
  • Eliminating ESL classes
  • Eliminating unused vacation time
  • Gutting the sick leave policy
  • Elimination of "past practice"
  • Making it easier to fire for "Job abandonment"
  • Taking away Professional Development days
But the fight is not over. We need to show a united front to the University through a strong vote in support of this contract! We must continue our fight to improve jobs for all state employees through these key efforts :
  • In September, we will return to the bargaining table, along with all Maryland state employees, to determine our raises for the following year. It is time to fight for the pay we deserve.
  • In November, we will go to the polls to (hopefully) elect a NEW governor. Governor Hogan does not respect people like us who work for the state. Most of the challengers would make it easier to negotiate on behalf of working families the Hogan did.

AFSCME MEMBERS TURN UP THE HEAT ON RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES DIRECTOR

5/9/2018

IT'S TIME FOR MANAGEMENT TO FEEL THE HEAT

A delegation of 12-15 members from housekeeping and maintenance approached Residential Facilities Director, Jon Dooley, during the Employee Recognition and Appreciation Luncheon for division staff at University of Maryland. Over 100 workers wore stickers in solidarity with AFSCME members,  during the luncheon and throughout the workday on Tuesday, May 8th.

AFSCME MEMBERS DEMAND BETTER WORKPLACE CONDITIONS

The delegation carried signs with our 4 demands.
  • Improve safety in hot buildings
  • Improve job safety
  • Increase summer staffing
  • Set reasonable work expectations
AFSCME Members lead by Chief Shop Steward, Saul Walker, started the action by thanking Dooley for adjusting the time of the luncheon so that workers can go home afterwards as they have done in the past. Dooley made this change last week after we submitted nearly 100 signatures demanding the change in timing.

EVERY ACTION HAS A EQUAL REACTION

After receiving the petition of over 100 signatures and witnessing the solidarity and strength our membership, Jon Dooley committed to meeting with staff no later than May 15th to discuss our demands regarding working conditions in the summer.

If you are interested in attending the meeting or want to support workers rights in your department,  please send a message to  info@afscme1072.org
